Qualification Routes for an ECS Black Card
The black card is reserved for those who work in managerial posts throughout the sector. There are several roles that this applies to. This includes Electrical Site Manager, Electrical Contract Manager, Project Manager, Site Manager, and Contract Manager. Like the gold card, there is a specific industry-related discipline who are eligible to apply. Datacomms ECS Black Cards will be granted to successful applicants working in the role of either Datacomms Engineer or Datacomms Manager (CTPM).
There are two ways to qualify for an ECS Black Card:
- Existing ECS Gold Card Holders: If you hold an ECS Gold Card, you automatically qualify, as you’ve already demonstrated expertise in the electrotechnical field.
- Level 4 Management Qualification: Achieve a relevant Level 4 qualification, such as a BTEC, an undergraduate degree in a related field, or a JIB-recognized employer program.
Health & Safety Requirements
Applicants must complete one of these approved Level 4 Health & Safety courses to be exempt from the ECS Health, Safety & Environment Assessment:
- CITB Site Supervisor/Management Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS/SMSTS)
- IOSH Safety Courses (e.g., for Directors)
- NEBOSH Diploma in Occupational Safety
- CCNSG Safety Passport for Supervisors
- Degree-level Health & Safety Qualification.
Health & Safety Course Exemption and ECS Card Application
Taking a Level 4 Health & Safety course exempts candidates from the ECS Health, Safety & Environment Assessment, as it demonstrates a high level of proficiency. This exemption is granted to individuals who complete one of the approved courses, such as the CITB or IOSH courses.
The ECS Black Card displays your managerial status and qualifications on the front, while the reverse shows your skill level and other credentials. The card’s colour easily identifies your status on-site.
Applying for Your ECS Card
we have a back door procedure where all your documents are processed showing records of all the required courses in the system but without you sitting for the official test. Your card is then produced and also registered on the ECS database. It is a 99% successful procedure
Discounts: If your employer is registered with the JIB Company scheme, you may receive a discount. Union members (e.g., Unite the Union) may also qualify for a further reduction.
